Ooh la la, a romantic "French" date without the plane ticket!
I've had crepes before and it's not typically a cheap date idea. However, DealPerkOC.com is currently offering a $20 value voucher for 1/2 price at a mere $10. Buy your voucher online now and use anytime until 10/26/10 at Crepes de Paris, so that's plenty of time to plan your date (5+ months to be exact). Although up to 5 may be purchased, only one voucher may be used per visit. There are 4 locations between LA and OC, but this offer is only good for the creperie in Irvine. I just bought mine, so I'll have to post a follow up once I've enjoyed this scrumptious French food!
In case you don't know, there are 2 types: savory and dessert. The more well-known one is the dessert crepe, which is usually covered in a sweet sauce like chocolate or nutella and whip cream. Savory simply means non-sweet, so those are the ones you can have as a meal. For example, there are breakfast crepes with eggs and bacon, or if you fancy meat, get the chicken with the mushrooms and spinach in a nice wine sauce. The menu is not limited to crepes though. The price of crepes ranges at $5-12, while the rest of the menu at $5-8: sandwiches, soup, salad and omelettes. According to reviews, the coffees are worth ordering ordering just to see the art on the frothy foam. Bon appetit!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $10 + Tip.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $20 Total.

174. Free Dinner with Dave
Good friends, Good (free) food, Great (free) music.
Dinner with Dave is a 100% free event with a complimentary light dinner at Memphis at the Santora in the Santa Ana Art District AND live music. I heard the food is good here and if it's anything like it's sister bar/restaurant, the nightlife atmosphere at the Manhattan Beach location is pretty cool (there's another one in Costa Mesa). Tomorrow on May 12th, the event kicks off with a DJ at 9 PM, then the live band and dinner start at 10 PM. It is a bit of a late start, but it's F-R-E-E. With that said, arrive early and enjoy a drink at their bar (optional). This is a great group date idea for 21+ (sorry, the restaurant is normally family-friendly, but not for this late-night activity).
The single-course dinner is served buffet style and according to many Yelp reviewers, Memphis at the Santora is yum! One Yelper claims that the freshly made chocolate berry bread pudding is worth the wait (and money). Parking is free here, either on the street or at a parking lot a block away. Free food, no cover AND free parking!
I won't be able to make it tomorrow night, but I'm marking my calendar for every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month (yes, it's bi-monthly!!). I'm not sure when @DinnerwithDave events first started but it's first mentioned on Yelp in 2007. Click HERE to read the Yelp reviews mentioning this event. I can't believe I just learned about it now. Looking forward to this one!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = Free.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

172. Free Bowling at Lucky Strike
Free bowling is a great group date idea!
Lucky Strike at L.A. Live is offering a free game with free shoes on Wednesday, May 12th. All you have to do is show up and say the magic words, "Bangerang Bowling", in honor of the movie, Hook. The alley will be open at 11:30 AM til 1 AM (must be 21+ after 7 PM). Depending on when you go, games are about $6-7 and shoe rental is $5. If Wednesday doesn't work for you, pay for bowling on Monday 5/10 and get a free entree. If free bowling wasn't enticing enough, maybe free food will?
If those days don't work for you, pick any day during the week! Their Lunch & Bowl special sounds like a pretty good deal too: Pay $7.95 for lunch and get a free game and shoes between 11:30 AM - 4 PM on Mon-Fri. If you prefer drink specials, then Lucky Hour is 4-7 PM daily (yes, including weekends!): $5 well drinks, $3 draft beer, $4 shots, $5 house wine by the glass and various food specials. Check out the website for other specials on Sundays and Tuesdays for 1/2 price bowling. As for parking, L.A. Live parking lot charges $5 for the first 2 hours.
If downtown LA is too far for you, check out these other bowling date ideas:

168. Tsunami Teppanyaki Dinner
One of my favorite style of cooking is teppanyaki, a Japanese cuisine that uses an iron griddle to cook food. The word is derived from teppan (iron plate) and yaki (grilled, broiled or pan-fried). Besides always being delicious, teppanyaki is like a dinner show (see onion volcano picture on right). The only downer is the price of this all-inclusive meal, which does include soup, veggies and rice.
However, Tsunami Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Huntington Beach makes it an affordable "cheap date" with the following dinner specials on weeknights:
UPDATE 05/18/10: I came here for 1/2 off sushi rolls, which are generous in size, so don't order too many at first like I did. There is plenty of teppan dining space, so reservations are not really required, but it will probably be quite busy for the $9.95 teppan. I'm definitely coming back on Thursday!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = As low as $8 pp + Tip + Tax.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

160. Pizza Amore at Avanti Cafe
2 Pizzas + 2 desserts + 2 drinks = $22 Total!
Thanks to DealPerk.com, you and your special someone can enjoy this at Avanti Cafe in Costa Mesa. Buy the voucher now and use it anytime through the rest of the year. That's 8 months to plan your pizza date! Ok, it might not quite be a "first date" idea, especially when it regularly costs $34. However, $11 per person is a pretty good deal for 2 medium (12") pizzas, 2 chef's choice desserts and 2 drinks. It can't get any cheaper than that for gourmet-style pizza.
With 4 out of 5 stars on Yelp, Avanti Cafe is a prime pizza joint, especially for vegeterians or vegans. This restaurant has received kudos for creating unique pizzas. I'm not talking about plain mushroom pizza (which sounds yummy to me), but Avanti offers Pizza Bianca, Garlic Greek Pizza, Shitake Artichoke Pesto and Riviera (all of which sounds even yummier!). Click HERE for the full menu. Hurry and get this deal before it's over! If you miss it, check back on DealPerk.com for future offers!

159. It's Just Lunch ($10 at Flemings)
Lunch date = Less pressure.
If you want something more casual than dinner, then lunch is your best bet. But the million-dollar question is where? If you are in the downtown area, Fleming's Steakhouse at L.A. Live is a nice date spot, but not usually a cheap date. With that said, I am delightfully surprised about their new lunch menu featuring 5 new affordable items: braised short rib sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, thai chicken salad, cajun chicken cobb salad and a steakhouse salad. You and your date can enjoy these for a mere $10 per plate on weekdays Mon-Fri 11:30 AM - 2 PM. For variety, get 2 plates and share family-style.
Fleming's does take reservations by phone (hint hint). Parking is $5 for the first 2 hours, but Flemings does validate, so it should be free unless you take an extended lunch. The best day to go would be this Thursday, April 22nd, for the Free Earth Fair. After lunch, enjoy free live music and entertainment at the Nokia Plaza at Noon - 6 PM. If you can't make lunch, happy hour runs 4-6 PM with 5 items at $6 each. For other "cheap eats", click HERE. Eat, drink and be merry!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $10 pp + Tip + Tax.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $26 Total.

154. XIV Happy Hour by Michael Mina
Happy Hours can be a classy date idea at the right spot.
Due to work and traffic, making it to Happy Hour on a weekday is not always realistic. Well, Michael Mina makes it possible at XIV Terrace in West Hollywood. Enjoy 1/2 off appetizers and 1/2 off cocktails with $5 well drinks every day of the week 5-8 PM except Sundays. Where else can you be happy for 3 whole hours on Saturdays?
Parking on Sunset Boulevard is limited, so the $5 valet during happy hour may be worth it. The drink and food menus are available online. For more info, click HERE for a detailed review by a fellow blogger, Gastronomer. Although not the cheapest, this has to be one of the most affordable yet classy date ideas on Sunset Boulevard for a Saturday night. This cheap date idea is on my list to do. I can't wait until we go!
For other happy hours at classy spots, check out Cheap Date Idea #143 at The London, which is in WeHo as well, and also Cheap Date Idea #97 at The Edison in Downtown LA.

149. Wine & Dine at Larchmont Grill
A nice dinner for two AND a bottle of wine for only $25 pp?!
As we all know, a dinner date is not typically a cheap date idea, but the Larchmont Grill has designated Thursday as "Date Night". Select 2 entrees (see special menu online) and a bottle of red or white (selection changed weekly) for $50 plus tip and tax. That's not a bad deal at $25 per person when an entree by itself usually costs $17-29 each (see regular menu online). Or come back on Sundays for a 3-course dinner with a glass of wine for $35 per person. The Larchmont Grill was rated 4 out of 5 stars on both Yelp and OpenTable with several reviewers noting this spot as romantic with ambiance.
Dinner reservations are available online via OpenTable.com or by phone starting at 5:30 PM until 10 PM daily except on Sundays until 9:30 PM. As for parking, you have the choice of street parking or valet service
For other dinner date ideas, check out Cheap Date Idea #115 at Brasserie Pascal in Newport Beach ($10-20 pp) and Cheap Date Idea #148 at Benihana ($37 for dinner-for-two).
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $25 per person + Tip + Tax.

148. Benihana Dinner for Two = $37
Teppanyaki is yummy & fun for a nice dinner date.
I love teppanyaki, which is the Japanese style of cooking with an open grill at your dining table. I have never been disappointed with a meal at Benihana, except the fact that it's not quite a cheap date. However, Benihana is offering a Hibachi Steak Dinner for Two during the month of April. This includes: onion soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, steamed rice, hibachi vegetables, homemade dipping sauces and Japanese hot tea. The only thing not included is dessert. You get ALL of this for only $37 plus tax and tip. Not the cheapest dinner date, but a darn good deal for a nice dinner.
Normally parking is free at the restaurants. Click HERE to find a participating location near you. This is not limited to LA & OC, so I'll start a new dating category (or tag, keyword, label) called national. No coupon is required, but reservations are highly recommended because this restaurant is super popular. If you have never been, you HAVE to go at least once. This is definitely a nice restaurant for a first date or a 365th date night. Just know that your hair and clothes will smell like the food when you walk out (due to the flaming onion volcano and whatever else is coming off the grill flames). Can't wait to go again, yum!
UPDATE 05/04/10: Their Chef's Special for the month of May is Filet-for-Two at $39 plus tax and tip. That breaks down to $25 per person, which is a good deal at Benihana. For an even better deal, check out Cheap Date Idea #168 for the 2-for-1 deal on Wednesdays or $9.95 anniversary special on 5/20.
UPDATE 05/17/10: Sign up for Benihana's eClub and get $30 off your meal on your birthday! Click HERE to sign up (minimum 10 days in advance to receive the certificate in the mail). So that means your dinner would be only $9!!! Thanks @callmemochelle for the tip! Every month the special changes, so check for updates via @Benihana__.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $37 Total + Tax + Tip (or $9 on your birthday)
Actual value of the cheap date = TBD.

115. Wine & Dine for Only $10-20
Going out for a nice dinner is not usually a cheap date but...
I was strolling through the Fashion Island Shopping Center in Newport Beach on Friday with my best friend when I discovered one of the best "cheap date" dinner date ideas! My friend just informed me that the French 75 turned into Brasserie Pascal here. If it's anything like the French 75 in Burbank, the ambiance here is classy and the food, delicious. New menu options were recently introduced at a price point ($10-20), which is quite reasonable for a French Bistro. The best part is that this special is good anytime, any day of the week, any time of the day!
Where else can you get Surf & Turf for $20 per person!! Or you can "settle" for a filet mignon (or halibut or a specialty crepe) AND an appetizer or dessert- 2-course meal for just $15! One of you can get the appetizer with your entree and the other, dessert, then split it, or go for double the dessert. Every entree comes with fixed sides. There are at least 3 choices for each course. My best friend has personally tasted the filet mignon when it was part of the $10 menu and confirms that Brasserie Pascal is a great cheap (yet classy) date spot.
I took a photo of the meal-deal ad (see right), but check out the full menu online (click HERE). Reservations are available online through either their website or on OpenTable.com. Actually, this is good deal for large birthday parties or group dates, because the bill is easier to split with set prices. The restaurant must have picked up on this because the one limitation in fine print is the $15 deal is not good for parties over 6 guests. By the way, parking at Fashion Island is free and plentiful.
Looking for something more casual than dinner? Check out their happy hour 4-7 PM on weeknights (website says 5-7 PM, but I called to confirm that it does start at 4 PM). For a mere $5, you have the choice of several champagne cocktails, some house wine as well as all well drinks. Based on Yelp reviewers, the "Pascal Patchwork" sampler tray for 2 more people is worth it at $10 per person. I'm definitely going to ask my significant other to come back here with me!
UPDATE 05/11/10: The Le Parfait Deal is back for the months of May and June. For a mere $10, enjoy 3 special meals almost any time any day except for dinner on the weekends (after 5pm on Fri-Sat and after 4pm on Sunday). I'm not talking about sandwiches either, but rather 2 sides with a main entree of grilled filet mignon, sauteed halibut or plat du jour (French for chef's daily special). I'd love to come here on a weeknight for a nice early dinner during happy hour (hint hint if my better half is reading).
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $10-20 per person + tax + tip.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

I'd love to come here on a weeknight for a nice early dinner during happy hour (hint hint if my better half is reading).
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $10-20 per person + tax + tip.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

101. $30 Date Night at The Grove
As we all know, dinner & movies are not really cheap dates.
Well, The Grove is making it more affordable with this special deal, $30 Date Night on weeknights (Mon-Thurs). At $30 per person, you get a 3-course meal for two, movie passes for two, and complimentary valet parking for you (which means pick up your date and carpool).
Bring your appetite since a 3-course meal is from start to finish: an appetizer, a main entree, and a dessert. The menus are available online for the 7 participating restaurants, which include places such as The Cheesecake Factory and Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro.
For a current listing of the movies showing at the Pacific Theatres at The Grove, click HERE. I personally recommend...

87. Pajama Night at Cafe 50's
Eat for FREE in your pajamas!
There's no need to dress up at The Cafe 50's because they will give your meal for free on the last Wednesday of every month. You do have to purchase a beverage with your meal, but it's still a great deal either way. Just something silly to do once in awhile...
To keep things "clean", they have hired their own "pajama judge" who will inspect your pajamas upon arrival and award you with a white token for wearing the proper traditional PJ's or a blue token for a decent attempt. The white token gets you 100% free meal, while the blue is like a second place prize with only 50% discount. So leave the sexy lingerie home for another date night.
Pajama Night is officially 6-10 PM, but breakfast is served all day, otherwise lunch and dinner meals are available too (see menu online). Cafe 50's is open from 7am til midnight daily or until 1 AM on weekends. There seems to be 3 locations according to Google Maps, but these specials apply to the one on Santa Monica Blvd right off the 405 Freeway.
Sign up for their frequent dining club, so you can enjoy perks, including FREE garlic fries and milk shakes, and also FREE meals on your birthday. Why go to Denny's, when you can support your local mom & pop shop? See you on Wednesday!
UPDATE 04/27/10: The definition of pajamas has evolved over time, but it's back to tradition at Cafe 50's with 2-piece button-down long sleeves and pantlegs with matching top and bottom with a collar. You may change into your PJ's at the cafe but the discount will be 50%, so wear your PJ's proudly into the joint and get your meal for FREE (with a purchase of a drink). For the complete rules for Pajama Night, click HERE.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = 2 Drinks + Tip.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Varies.

86. dineLA Retaurant Week is Back!
Restaurant Week is a cheap way to discover local eateries!
Enjoy 3-course lunches and dinners during dineLA Restaurant Week. Actually it's more like 2 weeks: Jan 24-29 and Jan 31 - Feb 5. On their website, you can easily sort through restaurants by name, lunch/dinner offering, price, cuisine, and neighborhood.

$$$ Fine Dining $28 L, $44 D
By the way, you can register online for a special American Express promotion, where you will receive a $20 credit after going to lunch or dinner 3 times during dineLA Restaurant Week (minimum $20 per meal, so this offer excludes only the deluxe lunch at $16pp). For example, if you go to 3 premier lunches at $22 each, then after the $20 credit, your final cost will have been $46 instead of $66 for 3 lunches or on average only $15 each!
Support your local businesses, especially the smaller ones. If you are on a budget, this is an excellent way to go out for lunch and dinner on a fixed amount. Everyone has to eat right? So you might as well try something new and different! Enjoy!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = As low as $16 per lunch plus tip.

18. Buona Vita is Buona Anytime
Buona Vita is my personal favorite Italian restaurant in Hermosa Beach for any occasion, whether it's a first date, your 365th date night or even a group birthday dinner. This cozy restaurant is popular especially during summer time, so the atmosphere is always lively during weekdays and weekends. Since it's first come, first serve, put your name down on the wait list, if there is a wait, then take a quick stroll on The Strand walkway to admire the sunset on the beach.
The menu is quite reasonable (see online), especially after a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant.com, which you can buy online right now for ONLY $4 instead of the regular $10 each. The discount code "harvest" expires on Nov 5th (yes, tomorrow, so I posted this a half-day early), but gift certificates have NO expiration date in the state of California. The minimum food purchase is $50, so you can spend as little as $25 out of pocket. That easily covers appetizer, salad, 2 entrees, and dessert. The best part is that there is no corkage fee at Buona Vita, making it a favorite among the locals to no surprise. TIP: Trader Joes is a fantastic place for picking up a good bottle of wine for about $6-10. Another TIP: Park behind the "Skate Park" about a block away for free or try to find a spot in the neighborhood for free during off-peak season (double check the street signs). Have a buona time!
UPDATE 12/11/09: Sale on Restaurant.com, buy a $25 gift certificate for only $2! Use discount code SHARE until 12/14/09. Metered parking is free for 3 hours during the Christmas holidays in Hermosa Beach.
Approximate cost of creative date idea= $2-4 Gift certificate + $7 Bottle of wine + $25 Dinner.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $70.

17. More Than A Happy Hour
Half-off wine bottles!! Yes, 50% discount. That sure is something to cheers about every week on Thursdays and Sundays til midnight. It's more than a Happy "Hour" at The Whisper Restaurant and Lounge at the Grove! After enjoying your bottle, take a romantic stroll next to the nearby "dancing water feature", which is like a mini version of the Bellagio Fountains in Vegas (don't forget your camera!). If you haven't had the pleasure of going yet, The Grove is a high-end shopping center with a lot of foot traffic even during weekdays. Reviews on Yelp.com noted that The Whisper was great for drinks and appetizers, especially on the outside patio for people watching. Side note: Watch out for Hulk Hogan this Thursday, Nov 5th, because he will be at that Barnes & Noble for his book signing. Cheers!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $20 depending on the bottle.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $40 depending on the bottle.

9. Tapas Tuesdays in Hermosa Beach
Mediterraneo in Hermosa Beach offers Happy Hour with 1/2 off tapas and $3 draft beer and house wine on week days from 5-7 PM, except tapas are 1/2 off all night on "Tapas Tuesdays". Reservations are highly recommended, especially for the outdoor patio seating during happy hours, sunset and summertime, but inside seating is just as lively. The atmosphere at Mediterraneo tends to be on the classy and trendy side compared to the other restaurant bars in Hermosa Beach.
This place is ideal for a first date or a birthday party or simply a friendly gathering. Most tapas range $5-7 per plate, but the full menu is available online. A parking garage is available between Coffee Bean and Starbucks on Hermosa Ave for a $1 per hour but it does get full at the end of the day during summer and weekends. If you are lucky, some street parking in the neighborhood away from the pier is free since permits are not required after 5 PM during off-peak season (Sept-May). Click here for my review about Mediterraneo on Yelp.com.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $25 depending on how much you order.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.
