Listening to jazz and wine tasting = Classy & romantic!
Hollywood & Highland is offering their 7th Annual Wine, Jazz & Moonlight Series. On every Tuesday evening this summer (June 9th - August 31st), the band starts playing at 7 PM. While the musical entertainment is free to the public, the wine tasting is optional. By the way, 100% of the proceeds do benefit a good cause. The $10 donation in Hollywood seems quite reasonable for 2 glasses and an assortment of gourmet cheeses, crackers and fruit. Overall, this is a classy (yet cheap) date idea, especially for jazz music lovers. These free jazz concerts can work as a group date, first date, family-friendly date, whatever you want it to be.
As with all free events, I'd arrive earlier to find parking and claim a spot in the Central Courtyard on the 2nd Level. Until the weather gets warmer, bundle up to enjoy this outdoor event for a minimum of 2 hours (7-9 PM). Bring a picnic and have dinner during the concert or eat at courtyard there (there's a crepe restaurant if my memory serves me right). Parking at H&H Center is only $2 for 4 hours with validation. If you can get into Hollywood in the afternoon, double the fun by stopping by Madame Tussauds, which is walking distance away (see Cheap Date Idea #54).

183. Devil's Night Drive-In
Date night at a drive-in sounds more fun & romantic, no?
Did you know that a patent was issued for the first drive-in theatre exactly 33 years ago from this month? The first one opened in June 1933! At that time, it was 25¢ per car and 25¢ per person ($1 total maximum). Sounds like a cheap date, right? Well, the admission at Devil's Night Drive-in (formerly known as Angel City, ironically enough) is at least comparable to a regular movie theater ticket at $10 pp. Despite the price, many Yelpers have raved about this being a great date night idea (4.5 stars).
For a guaranteed parking spot in front of the screen, pre-sale tickets are available online 1.5 weeks prior and until 2 PM on the day of the show. Due to limited capacity (60+ cars), come early to find this place on top of a 2-story parking structure in Downtown LA and settle in with a FM-transmitter. With a DJ to entertain, gates open 1.5 hours before show time, usually at 8 or 9 PM. No car is required though as walk-ins and bike-ins are welcome to sit and watch from a designated astroturf area. If you do, feel free to bring lawn chairs, blankets and bundle up. Like in the good ol' days (before my time), car hops on rollerskates go around to the cars offering popcorn, candy, hot dogs, soda, coffee and tea, all at non-theater prices. Here's the best part of Devil's Night: you can bring your own food and drinks (Read: BYOB).
On the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month, get ready to watch some oldies but goodies on a 24'x18' projector screen (see website for tickets and updates):

182. Cinespia Cemetery Screenings
Watching movies at the cemetery with wine & beer?!?!
I've watched movies in the park, but have yet to do it at a cemetery! Sounds creepy yet fun at the same time. The Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery has a whopping 4.5 stars rating by 200+ Yelpers. From what I gather, part of the appeal that sets it apart from a movie theatre is that you can bring a picnic and drinks (yes, alcohol IS permitted) PLUS a DJ spins records before and after the screening. The $10 cash donation (for grounds keeping) is comparable to the price of a theater ticket nowadays, however the whole experience pales in comparison. This is a great idea for a group date, maybe even for a first date.
Cinespia Cemetery Screenings is on it's 10th season of summer series (May - October). Screenings are usually on Saturday nights with bonus nights on holiday weekends on occasion. Here's the schedule for the first month:

179. Summer Live Music at Malibu Wines
Wine + live music = romantic date idea, even a first date idea!
Starting Memorial Weekend, the Summer Live Music is back at the Malibu Wines tasting room! The winery, Malibu Family Wines provides live music for free starting May 28th until October 24th by night (Fri-Sat 7-9 PM) or day (Sat-Sun 1-3 PM). This is definitely something worth checking out at least once in the next 5 months, especially when the weather is perfect for an outdoorsy activity. The property is family-friendly during the day, so the kids and adults can enjoy the mid-day concerts (1-3 PM) on Saturdays and Sundays. After 6 PM, it's adults only for the evening concerts (7-9 PM) on Fridays and Saturdays.
My friend took us here last summer since it's her favorite spot and then we were pleasantly surprised (as you can tell by my photo here) by a live band coming onto stage. There is one requirement for admission: a purchase of at least one bottle of wine by each group. That is unless you catch the wine tastings before it ends at 6 PM, however sharing a bottle is more cost-effective. Invite your friends to share a bottle (or two or three) and make it a group date! Bottles range $14-27, so that could be as cheap as $3.50pp on a double date! As for parking, it's free along Mulholland Highway, but carpool and come early as these events get packed. Bring a picnic and a blanket, otherwise some food is available for purchase there and tables are reserved for minimum purchases.
While you're up in Malibu, make it a full day of fun by combining it with one of these other things to do:

The Montage Resort in Laguna Beach has been recommended by several friends. Actually, one of my friends got engaged there. I've been once but definitely want to come back again during the Celebration of Earth Day (or long weekend is more like it). Honestly, you don't really need an excuse like Earth Day or an engagement to come to the Montage!

131. Saturday Nights at The Getty
The Getty + FREE concert = Classy date idea!
The Saturday Nights at The Getty is happening again on April 17th. The free concert starts at 7:30 PM, just in time for the sunset (7:27 PM to be exact). ...So why not come a bit early, wander the art exhibits and then enjoy from the gardens overlooking Downtown LA? That's Cheap Date Idea #32! Parking is normally $15 but it's free after 5 PM every Saturday. Refreshments are available for sale at the concert. If my memory serves me right, a glass of wine was $7 each. Click HERE for a music sample of the band, Michachu and the Shapes. I don't personally go for the music itself, but it's just something to do and great for a group date. This could be a first date idea too.
Admission is free, but advance reservations are required. You can make reservations online or by phone starting Tuesday, March 23rd at 9 AM (I'll send out a reminder, but mark your calendar now if you want to go). These events happen about once per month during spring and summer and always sell out in advance. Feel free to check the calendar online for upcoming events. 114. Cheap (& FREE) Laughs at UCB Theatre
Cheap date = cheap laughs and it's BYOB!
For a whole $1 (or 4 quarters), you can laugh with (or at) Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm (see photo on right) on Sundays at 6 PM at the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Theatre in Hollywood Hills. Bring cash and get your tickets same day, but the shows have been known to sell out fast. Making advance reservations are highly recommended. FREE shows are available at 7:30 PM on Sundays and Tuesdays. Unfortunately, reservations are not accepted for these free shows, so plan to get in line early (30-45 minutes is recommended). Otherwise, UCB Theatre offers at least 3 different shows every day of the week for a mere $5 or 8. As for the paid shows, improv on Wednesday nights at 9:30 PM looks hilarious where they randomly select 2 people from the crowd to publicly examine their Facebook pages. Needless to say, this particular one is not for the shy folk out there.
The doors usually open 15 minutes beforehand, but come early to get seats as this place is on a first come, first serve basis. Beer and soda are available in the lobby for $1 each. Here's the best part: It's BYOB. Yes, you heard me: NO corkage fee and NO 2-drink minimum here unlike all the comedy clubs, so this is truly a cheap date! As for parking, valet here is cheap at $5, not a bad deal for Hollywood. If you want more cheap laughs, check out Cheap Date Idea #92.

112. FREE Cooking Classes
Learning something new together can be thrilling.
Williams-Sonoma offers complimentary Technique Classes every Sunday. Class size is limited, so make sure to call in advance to reserve two spots. The start time is 10 AM at the South Coast Plaza store in Costa Mesa, Orange County, but call the one near you to confirm their schedule. There is one more class scheduled for February called Incredible Eggs on 2/28, then the theme switches to Baking Series in March.
UPDATE 03/02/10: Bad news: The Simply Souffle class at the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa is FULL for this Sunday, March 7th. Williams-Sonoma offers complimentary Technique Classes every Sunday. Class size is limited, so make sure to call in advance to reserve two spots. The start time is 10 AM at the South Coast Plaza store in Costa Mesa, Orange County, but call the one near you to confirm their schedule. 97. 100¢ Cocktail Night at The Edison
$1 Cocktails + FREE Burlesque Show = Cheap yet classy date!
If you are going to be a "cheap date", then do it at The Edison in Downtown LA on Wed-Fri 5-7 PM. Cocktails normally cost at least 10 bucks each in LA, but during Happy Hour that's equivalent to a whopping 10 drinks at $1 each. Heck, you can afford to show off to your date by offering a free round to strangers at the bar. The best day to go is on Thursdays, so you can stick around to view the FREE burlesque show at 8:30-11:30 PM (2/4, 2/18, 3/4, etc.) or every other Thursday dance to the tunes of a DJ. The website does not quite say how long the "Centennial Celebration Cocktail Hour" lasts, but it's on the calendar through April 2010.
I normally don't blog too much about Happy Hours for cheap date ideas, but The Edison is a classy spot to take a date. When I went with my girlfriends, we were surprised by a snake charmer who came out for a free performance, but I don't know how often that happens. Needless to say, I definitely want to go back again with my man. The ambiance here is incomparable with fancy and weird lighting decor (the place is named after the guy who invited light bulbs). If you call for reservations in advance, you can grab a bite to eat there too, but be forewarned that it's not cheap here ($25 minimum per person).
This upscale lounge/restaurant (don't forget to dress to impress) is a cool place to go anytime of the year on Wednesdays-Saturdays, but it will be open for a special event on Sunday of Valentine's Day at 7 PM. On-line tickets are going for $20, which include admission that day as well as one free martini. Valet parking is always $9 unless you are lucky enough to find a street meter.

96. The Getty Villa in Malibu
Museums are always a classy idea, even when it's FREE!
If you've enjoyed The Getty Center in Los Angeles (see Cheap Date Idea #32), then you have to check out The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, near Malibu. Of if you simply appreciate architecture and gardens, then this spot is for you. The art is interesting, but I personally love just strolling around the estate weaving in and out of the fancy statues and fountains. The weather was perfect when we went as you can tell by the photo here.
The Getty Villa is a great day date idea anytime throughout the year (including Valentine's Day, hint hint) since the museum is open daily 10 AM - 5 PM except Tuesdays. Admission is always free but reservations are required by internet or phone (click ). It's also a good group date idea, but you have to call in for your reservation if more than 15 people. Parking is not cheap ($15), so carpool if you can or take the Metro.
Just like The Getty Center, various free tours are provided at the Getty Villa, so check the schedule online to plan your visit accordingly. I recommend going on the Architecture and Gardens Tour, but you can easily wander about on your own if you prefer. Looking for an active and creative cheap date idea?
Mark you calendar for the 3rd Annual Venice Valentine's Scavenger Hunt (and bike ride). If you're already booked for that Sunday, make it a full weekend of fun with your Valentine. There are 5 scavenger hunts from which to choose: Saturday, Feb 13th at 10 AM or 2 PM, and Sunday Feb 14th at 10 AM, 1 PM, or 4 PM. Admission is not quite cheap at $25pp, but at least $1 of it will go toward a good cause at the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The hunt sold out early last year, so buying tickets in advance online is recommended.
The event host advertises that scavenger hunts are out of the box events that help build better teams. What an interesting and undoubtedly true concept! If you were born to be creative and want to take the initiative, why not DIY and create your own scavenger hunt! Venice Beach is always a lively scene, but a hunt can be done practically anywhere you wish. This would be perfect for a surprise date idea on Valentine's Day or anytime of the year. I suggest making it a group date idea to stir up some friendly competition. Treat the winning couple to Happy Hour or agree on something mutually beforehand. Don't forget to bring your digital cameras on the scavenger hunt!

Yup, it's all free at the Meatballs of Comedy Show at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club. @TheMeatballs invites their Twitter friends to come down to CityWalk (next to Universal Studios Hollywood) for a night of fun this Sunday, Jan 31st, at 6 PM. 90. FREE Ice Skating at OC Great Park - 1/30
FREE sledding, FREE ice skating, FREE helium balloon rides!
Celebrate Snow Day on this Saturday, January 30th, 11 AM - 4 PM, at the OC Great Park in Irvine. Where else can you go for a winter wonderland with free sledding, free snowman making, and free snow play? You don't even have to bring a sled because OC Great Park provides sleds for free on Snow Day. Just bring yourself and a fun date! Actually, this can be a good "group date" idea and even a first date idea...
The fun does not stop at Snow Day! It's also the opening day for the OC Great Park's "Great Skate Ice Rink". This is the ONLY ice skating rink that I know is absolutely FREE: free admission, free skate rentals, free helmets AND free parking. However, there is a small parking fee of $8 on special event days, such as the opening day 1/30. Ice skating is a pretty cheap date idea, but FREE is even better! Other rinks can cost $8-$15.50 per person in the LA and OC areas (click HERE for a list comparison), but most of the ice rinks are already closed for the winter season.
For the next month (Jan 30 - Feb 28), the rink will be open every weekend (Fri-Sun) at 11 AM - 10 PM, where skate session times start on the hour with 15 minute breaks every hour. The best time to go is on Sunday Nights if you want to skate to the music of your favorite decade: 70's at 7 PM, 80's at 8 PM, and 90's at 9 PM. Ice skating is a family-friendly activity, which means lots of kids. If you prefer less craziness, I suggest going later in the season before the rink shuts down.

It's like a mini-romantic getaway in Newport Harbor!

68. Jon Lovitz Comedy Club Universal Citywalk
Laughing is a good ice breaker for a first date or anytime.
The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club is a place worth considering since it's nestled in Universal Citywalk, next to Universal Studios, which offers free admission to the general public. You can stroll around this entertainment area before or after the show and simply hang out.
For the comedy show, the cheapest tickets on Goldstar.com go for $7.50 Total Per Person ($5 Admission plus $2.50 Service Fee). Regular Admission is normally $10-20 pp. Discounted show times are mostly Sundays at 6 PM in January and February. The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club is a place worth considering since it's nestled in Universal Citywalk, next to Universal Studios, which offers free admission to the general public. You can stroll around this entertainment area before or after the show and simply hang out.
For the comedy show, the cheapest tickets on Goldstar.com go for $7.50 Total Per Person ($5 Admission plus $2.50 Service Fee). Regular Admission is normally $10-20 pp. Discounted show times are mostly Sundays at 6 PM in January and February. 57. Tide Pools at Abalone Cove
Explore nature at the beach = free yet quite romantic!
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is a hidden gem in The City of Ranchos Palos Verdes right off Portuguese Bend. Here you can find 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove), tide pools, bluff top viewing areas, 2 long yet easy hiking trails, and apparently fighting hermit crabs (see photo on right).

Sea anemones and star fish are also easily visible from the shoreline, but sadly abalone are nonexistent nowadays. A convenient parking lot is available for a mere $5 unless you can snag a spot along Palos Verdes Drive South and don't mind a 5-minute walk from the neighborhoods.
This place gets my vote for one of the best date ideas because it hits 5-in-1 categories: free, day date, romantic, outdoors and active. The park is open daily from Noon - 4 PM on weekdays and 9 AM - 4 PM on weekends, but is closed for some holidays. Make sure to stick around to enjoy the spectacular view of the ocean and Catalina Island during sunset, which is less than an hour after closing during this time of year. If you were not aware, the best time to go is during low tide, so that the most sea life will be exposed. The lowest tide of the year is expected on New Year's Eve around 2 PM. If you want to learn fun facts and don't mind the trek, take advantage of the FREE tide pool tours at Crystal Cove in Laguna Beach (next one is scheduled on 12/31, see Cheap Date Idea #44).
UPDATE 01/09/10: Point Vicente Interpretive Center offers a FREE monthly 2-hour activity, which includes tide pool tours of of Abalone Cove Shoreline Park. Any parking fees at PVIC are waived for 30 minutes before and after the event. Click HERE for a map of PVIC and more info. The schedule for 2010 include the following tide pool tours:

Do hurry since there are 5 more discounted shows for the rest of the month, only two of which are free on Tues 12/22 and Wed 12/30. Goldstar.com does charge a small fee $3-4 per ticket, but that's not bad when Regular Admission is $14. Show times are usually at 8 or 10 PM. As with all comedy clubs, there is a 2-drink minimum, which makes it a good post-dinner date idea. The later the better anyway because metered parking is free in that area after 7 PM. If you can't make it this month, sign up on Goldstar.com to get weekly notifications about new discounts at this comedy club (and other attractions around LA and OC). Have fun!
