The adults come out to play at LA's Best Museum Party Night!
Last year, the Natural History Museum of LA won a Best of LA Award for their Museum Party Night. On First Fridays for the first half of the year (Jan-June), NHMLA offers a sophisticated event for adults to enjoy culture and music. The fun begins with DJs and a free guided museum tour at 5:30 PM and the party continues until 10:30 PM. For the line up at the next (and sadly last) FF on June 4th, click HERE.
The FF tickets are $15 pp, which not only gets you into the concert hall but also the museum. Regular museum admission is $9, so that's a mere $6 more for a night of fun. As for parking, the lot across the way is $10 unless you get lucky with street parking. Purchasing tickets in advance online is highly recommended because the event usually sells out early. Note: June 4th is the last FF event of the year. I'm so sad that I'll be out of town, but other fun events are brewing at NHMLA.
Lines start forming at 7:30 PM with the doors of the performance hall opening up at 8:30 PM for the opening act and then the headliner goes on at 9:45 PM. The hall capacity is 500 but you can also watch the performance on projected screens throughout the Grand Foyer. To capture the fun, 3D photos are taken by NHMLA and posted on their Flickr (see example on right here). Bring your own camera and smiles! If you can come earlier and beat traffic to Downtown LA, bring a picnic too and enjoy the sunset with dinner in the middle of Exposition Park, which is right next door to NHMLA.

181. Greek Fests 2010
Opa!! It's time to eat and dance with the Greeks!
The Greek Festivals are coming!! I love watching the live music, Greek dancing & lessons (see my picture below), arts & crafts and (the best part in my opinion) Greek food & desserts (baklava, yum!). In general, these events run all weekend, Friday to Sunday, starting at 5 PM on Fridays and noon on Saturdays and Sundays, while closing up at 10 or 11 PM every night. Click on the links below for details and directions about each one. Admission ranges from FREE to $5 while kids under 12 are free at most festivals. Parking is free at all these locations and some provide free shuttles too.

According to the UrbanDictionary.com, opa is a word that Greek people use for no apparent reason at all and is used to describe a jubilant emotion of/during celebration. Opa, opa , opa!!!

169. FREE Tuesday Night Cafe
Support your local artists in Downtown LA!
Yup, it's Tuesday again, which means Tuesday Night Project shares performing art again with the public, such as music, poetry, theatre, comedy improv, dance, karaoke and more. Tuesday Night Cafe (TNC) is a FREE event at 7:30 PM every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month between April and October. Of course, donations are always appreciated! This outdoor performance is usually held at the Aratani Courtyard in Little Tokyo, which is family-friendly and dog-friendly (that's a rare find!). For directions, tonight's line up and updates, click HERE.
TNC has been teetering between #1 and #2 spot for Yelp LA Nightlife (click HERE to read Yelp reviews). Either way, this is something worth checking out. Street parking is free after 8 PM. The cheapest paid parking lot is at Joe's on 2nd St between Central and San Pedro. Come early to find parking and grab a seat. Otherwise, bringing your own chair and blanket would be a smart idea to stay comfortable for 2 hours outdoors. No drinks and food are served here, so feel free bring something or stop into Little Tokyo Cafe next door before the show.
If prefer to watch from the comfort of your own home or are out of town, watch the performances LIVE online (yes, streaming live at 7:30 PM PST). If you miss it or simply want to rewatch it, no worries! TNC is on YouTube too! As of this moment, there are at least 16 previous shows at your fingertips. Enjoy!

Free admission, Free parking, Free audio tour!
Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA) in Long Beach is open 11 AM - 5 PM on Wed-Sun. The best day to go is Sunday, so you can save yourself (and your date) $9 each on general admission (say thank you to Target!). The free Sundays are on the MoLAA calendar through the month of July 2010. Here's an interesting feature at this museum: FREE cell phone tour. You can simply dial the phone number next to each art piece and listen to the audio tour. No need to rent equipment. This works out nicely on Sundays when cell phone minutes are free anyways. For this upcoming Sunday 4/18, enjoy Venezuelan art, food and music too!
Based on 51 kind reviewers on Yelp, MoLAA is rated a 4.5 out of 5 Stars. Several claim this is a must-see for both locals and tourist, so now it's on my list of cheap date ideas to do! In addition to the free audio tour, check out the free docent tours at 2-3 PM on most Sundays (check the calendar online for updates). Several museums offer free days, but this museum offers free parking too!

155. Miracle Mile Art Walk - 4/17
Art Walks are a classy date idea!
It's that time of the year for the quarterly Miracle Mile Art Walk. Enjoy a full day of culture on Saturday, April 17th throughout the areas in Wilshire, Beverly and La Brea.
Various artist/gallery talks and receptions run non-stop between Noon - 10 PM and are open to the public (a few require RSVP). Or take a self-guided tour through the 46 participating galleries, including the LA County of Museum of Art (AKA LACMA). Click HERE for the complete schedule and map. For more info about free or BOGO tickets at LACMA during other times of the year, see Cheap Date Idea #80.
LACMA is a good meeting spot, especially for a group date. The 6th Street parking garage east of Fairfax Avenue is $7 flat rate, but free after 7 PM if you prefer to come late to the "after parties". 152. Cherry Blossom Festival - 4/10-11
Sumo wrestling, kimono fashion show, sake tastings and more!
If you can't enjoy the sakura (cherry blossom in English) in Japan like we did (see our photo below), then come on down to Little Tokyo of Downtown LA this weekend. The 2nd Annual Cherry Blossom Festival starts at 10:30 AM on both days and ends by 6:30 PM on Saturday 4/10 and 5 PM on Sunday 4/11. The better day to go is Saturday (expected to be cloudy) since Sunday has a 30% of chance for a few showers, but it is a rain or shine event.
The weekend is jam packed with activities, including sumo wrestling matches, kimono fashion show (Saturday only) and sake tastings. A detailed event program with a minute-by-minute schedule and map is available online. For directions and parking info, click HERE. There are several parking lots in the area, but I don't recall the cost. Next time, I'd take the Metro, which conveniently stops into Little Tokyo.
While you're down there, check out the Japanese Village Plaza (free to browse), The Geffen Contemporary Museum at MOCA (click HERE for 2-for-1 admission coupon) and the Japanese-American National Museum. To celebrate this special moment of vernal equinox, join in the Persian Festival of Nrouz on Sunday, March 7th, at The Bowers Musuem in Santa Ana. Museum hours are 10 AM - 4 PM daily except for Mondays and a few holidays. For this particular festival, the celebration will be held Noon - 3:30 PM. Spend your Sunday afternoon immersing in Persian culture, including traditional Persian dance, music, food, art, face painting, etc. General admission is normally $12 per person but it's completely free tomorrow. The event is family friendly and a casual day date idea for a group.
If you can't make it this Sunday, come back on the first Sunday of every month in 2010 for FREE admission courtesy of Target. The festival theme changes every month. Here's a quick list for the rest of this year, but check the website for details about each event.

119. Chinese Lantern Festival - 3/6
Something cultural AND free = cheap date idea!
If you missed out on last month's Golden Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival (Cheap Date Idea #107), you have another chance for some cultural diversity on this Saturday, March 6th. The Annual Chinese Lantern Festival is an event that always marks the closing of the Chinese New Year Festivities.
With 7 hours filled with FREE entertainment starting at noon, the list is too long to post here. To highlight a few, there will be various stage performances by folk dancers, acrobats, magicians, as well as several arts and crafts booths. You and your partner can do face painting... Or how about try the art of lantern-making or origami? It may look easy but I bet it won't be. Make sure to stay for the closer: The Silver Dragon Parade! Check the website for a map and complete schedule.
Of course, the one day that it is expected to rain has to be on the day of another festival and parade. Stay tuned for weather updates on Saturday. 116. St. Patrick's Day Parade - 3/13
What are YOU doing on Saturday, March 13th?
Every year, the city of Hermosa Beach hosts a St. Patrick's Day Parade with family-friendly festivities FREE to the public. The start time is 9 AM but the parade doesn't start til 11 AM on the corner of Pier Ave and Valley Drive. This is an easy day date idea by the beach... Just perfect for a picnic, so don't forget a beach blanket and sun block. Oh, and wear something green!
Parking can be tricky due to all the street closures on Pier Ave, Valley Drive and Hermosa Ave, so make sure to arrive early. Street parking is available without permits since it's not peak season unless you are lucky to grab a meter, but that's only good for 3 hours. There is also a free parking lot behind the skate park on the south side of Pier Ave Click HERE for the event flyer.

111. Free Museum Day at MOCA
Museums are always a classy cultural date idea.
Not to mention it's something easy to do, especially when it's FREE. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) on Grand Avenue is free to the public on Thursday evenings, 5-8 PM. Please note that this is separate from The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, which is also located in Downtown LA but on North Central Avenue. Say thank you to Wells Fargo for saving $10 pp. If Thursdays don't work, get 2-for-1 admission by taking the metro, but the museum usually closes early at 5 or 6 PM even on the weekends (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). In case art is not your forte, take advantage of the free conversational tours of the current exhibits, which is available every day at various hours, including Thursday evening at 5, 6 and 7 PM (see schedule online).
Parking is $9 flat rate at the parking garage at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with MOCA validation. Click HERE for directions and more info. Make the most of your date by arriving earlier to enjoy the outdoor water feature in the center of the LA Music Center Plaza. This spot makes a great photo op, especially at sunset, or wait until later for some nighttime romantic shots at the water feature. For ideas on what else to do here, the LA Music Center offers suggested itineraries online, which mention a FREE 1-hour tour of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Whether or not you appreciate music, the architecture is worth admiring. Come back during summer and the holidays to enjoy FREE concerts in the plaza, such as Cheap Date Idea #58.

Not to mention it's something easy to do, especially when it's FREE. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) on Grand Avenue is free to the public on Thursday evenings, 5-8 PM. Please note that this is separate from The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, which is also located in Downtown LA but on North Central Avenue. Say thank you to Wells Fargo for saving $10 pp. If Thursdays don't work, get 2-for-1 admission by taking the metro, but the museum usually closes early at 5 or 6 PM even on the weekends (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). In case art is not your forte, take advantage of the free conversational tours of the current exhibits, which is available every day at various hours, including Thursday evening at 5, 6 and 7 PM (see schedule online).
Parking is $9 flat rate at the parking garage at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with MOCA validation. Click HERE for directions and more info. Make the most of your date by arriving earlier to enjoy the outdoor water feature in the center of the LA Music Center Plaza. This spot makes a great photo op, especially at sunset, or wait until later for some nighttime romantic shots at the water feature. For ideas on what else to do here, the LA Music Center offers suggested itineraries online, which mention a FREE 1-hour tour of Walt Disney Concert Hall. 109. Long Beach Mardi Gras - 2/20
Didn't make it to Fat Tuesday in New Orleans or San Diego?
Well, the party is on again this Saturday, February 20th, in Downtown Long Beach, which is much closer than NOLA or SD (see Cheap Date Idea #106 for next year). This event is more family friendly if that's a factor for you. Mix and mingle around Rainbow Harbor at the Aquarium of the Pacific (see Cheap Date Idea #15), Shoreline Village and The Pike. The Long Beach Mardi Gras will essentially be a huge block party like the one on New Year's Eve (see Cheap Date Idea #64). (Tip: Make sure to wear comfy shoes.)

The FREE entertainment runs all day (Noon - 6 PM) with about 10 live bands and DJ's at various stages between the 3 areas, fire dancers, mask/bead making, carnival games and more. Best of all, the parade starts at 3 PM. Check the website for a detailed schedule of events at each location. Although these activities end by 6 PM, the party does not stop there! Pre-sale tickets for the Mardis Gras Concert are available online for $15 pp. No parking information appears to be available at the moment, but check the info listed on Cheap Date Idea #64.
This weekend will be hopping in LA with another FREE huge celebration, the Golden Dragon Parade on Saturday and the Lunar New Year Festival on both days (see Cheap Date Idea #107). 107. Golden Dragon Parade - 2/20
Celebrate the Chinese New Year in China Town.
The actual day of the Chinese New Year was yesterday on Valentine's Day but the festival will be held this upcoming weekend on both Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 AM and running all day, but the 111th Annual Golden Dragon Parade is only on Saturday afternoon, 2-5 PM. Some day, I'd love to check out the Chinese New Year celebration in China, but it's a much more affordable (AKA cheap date) to partake in the festivities in China Town of Los Angeles. Think of it as a cultural date idea, something more creative than a movie-and-dinner date (like Cheap Date Idea #101).
This might be obvious, but you don't have to be Chinese to celebrate, although the crowd will predominantly be Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese. Over 110,000 individuals are expected to be lined up for the parade, so make sure to get there early for parking and claim your spot along Cesar Chavez and Broadway. Click HERE for a downloadable map and more info. Taking public transportation may be worth considering. We might make the trek this year, so maybe we'll see you there! Except the weather bunny is expecting some rain this weekend, which would put a damper on a parade... Stay tuned for a weather update closer to the weekend.

106. Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp - 2/16
You don't have to go to New Orleans to celebrate Fat Tuesday.
Join the block party on Tuesday, February 16th, 6:00 - 11:55 PM, in part of Downtown San Diego, called the Gaslamp District. Mardi Gras is a great event for people watching (bring your camera). This is not the place to be for any bashful types and definitely not a first date idea, but it does work for a group date for those looking for a crazy time. I'm personally not into the bead tradition, so bring your own if you got 'em.
The 2 parades are are scheduled for 7:30 and 10 PM on 5th Avenue. In between, enjoy live music outdoors at various stages and lounges. Just to name a few... Check out the G Street Skate Fever where experienced skaters will be showing off their tricks and dance moves on skates.The Market Street Cirque (AKA circus) will also be lively with performances by aerial acrobats, fire eaters, puppets and more. Don't miss out on Carnivale Alley on Island Avenue, where you can play some carnival games with all proceeds going to charities. The complete list of performances and showtimes is available online.
Buy advance tickets online for $15 per person ($16.78 Total after convenience fees) in order to avoid the long lines. For this large event, parking may be a nightmare but thankfully there are several options, including taking the San Diego Trolley. Click HERE for directions, maps and tips. 103. Ballroom Dance Lessons
Ballroom dancing can be a cheap yet classy date idea!
Even if you have 2 left feet, come join the other brave folk on Wednesdays evenings (7-11 PM) through the Santa Monica Bay Woman's Club. The $10 admission (probably cash only) includes a quick dance lesson 7-7:40 PM, so make sure to show up on time! 40 Minutes may sound quick, but you have the rest of the night to practice your new moves. No partner is required, because you'll find plenty on the dance floor. Better yet, grab your partner and learn how to Tango together! Or how about Salsa, Swing, or Cha Cha? A new dance is featured every 1-3 weeks with lessons starting from the basics and building each week. By the way, you can go on any Wednesday night, but don't miss out on the 1st anniversary party on March 3rd (check website for details).

Be prepared for 4 hours of fun: wear comfortable shoes, bring bottled water for yourself and your partner (light snacks are provided). $10 sounds quite reasonable for a 40-minute lesson immediately followed by 3 hours of putting it to good use. More importantly, there's plenty of room for 2 left feet here on the 3,000 square foot ballroom dance floor. With that much space, I'd assume that the air conditioning in here is sufficient. If you're already an expert, 10 bucks seems to be a pretty good deal for 4 hours of fun. As for parking, there are several parking lots in Santa Monica for a $3 flat rate after 6 PM (click HERE for parking map).
Learning some dance moves could create a spark (for new couples) or re-ignite a flame (for old couples). This could be something fun to do as a group date too! If anything, at least this active date idea gets you off the couch. Heck, ask your significant other afterward for one-on-one dance sessions (just a tip for a follow-up date). The last time I did tango lessons, all the guys were sweating bullets, making it difficult for me to hang onto my partners. Despite that one not-so-positive detail, dance lessons are a great way to meet people, if that's something you want. No matter who your partner is, think of this cheap date idea as a self-improvement project. Ballroom dancing is a skill that's handy whether you're single or married.

This adults-only Valentine's activity is rated PG-13.
...Just in case you or your significant other are the bashful type. More importantly, no a priori knowledge about art or nudity is required to participate, but be prepared to tackle witty, tricky questions. Watson Adventure's sets up fun hunts such as this one at major cities across the US, including LA and San Fran within California. Check their website for times and locations.
Admission to the Getty is normally free, but tickets for the event are available online for advance purchase at $22 per person (no tickets at the door). If you have plans already on Valentine's Day, there are actually 3 scavenger hunts planned that weekend: Saturday, Feb 13th at 1:00 and 4:30 PM as well as Sunday, Feb 14th at 1:00 PM. Parking is $15 as normal at the Getty. Unfortunately, the 4:30 PM hunt just misses the free parking which starts at 5 PM on Saturdays. For those having fun at 1 PM, stick around to enjoy the spectacular view of the city from the garden area at sunset, always a Kodak Moment.
The hunts are set up for teams of 2-6 people, so it's good for a date, double date or a group date. If you two go on your own, this is a good opportunity to meet other couples. 98. FREE Hawaii at The Grove
Hawaii is not a cheap date, so let the island paradise come to you for FREE!
The Grove is a cool hang out place anytime of the year, but even more so when this upscale shopping center is transformed into a tropical paradise on Saturdays throughout this month of February. Free activities and entertainment will be running Noon - 7 PM, such as listening to live Hawaiian music, learning how to hula dance, "making your very own flower lei, creating unique palm frond crafts, getting a temporary Hawaii-inspired tattoo, and sampling coffee and flavors of the islands".
A different tropical island will be featured every Saturday. Click HERE for more info about specific activities and entertainment on each day.
While you're there, don't miss out on the Kodak Moment in front of the mini-Bellagio-like "dancing" water feature (free hourly show). For more fun, take a free quick ride (6 minutes for 1/4 mile) on The Grove Trolley, which runs back and forth between The Grove and Farmer's Market. For lunch, the brazilian BBQ is my absolute favorite at the Farmer's Market. Pampas Grill is not the sit-down/all-you-can-eat type, so it's more affordable. This Farmer's Market is open every day, different from the local weekly farmer markets. All of this makes for a good day date. Enjoy!

96. The Getty Villa in Malibu
Museums are always a classy idea, even when it's FREE!
If you've enjoyed The Getty Center in Los Angeles (see Cheap Date Idea #32), then you have to check out The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, near Malibu. Of if you simply appreciate architecture and gardens, then this spot is for you. The art is interesting, but I personally love just strolling around the estate weaving in and out of the fancy statues and fountains. The weather was perfect when we went as you can tell by the photo here.
The Getty Villa is a great day date idea anytime throughout the year (including Valentine's Day, hint hint) since the museum is open daily 10 AM - 5 PM except Tuesdays. Admission is always free but reservations are required by internet or phone (click ). It's also a good group date idea, but you have to call in for your reservation if more than 15 people. Parking is not cheap ($15), so carpool if you can or take the Metro.

I recommend going on the Architecture and Gardens Tour, but you can easily wander about on your own if you prefer. 89. Free Day at La Brea Tar Pits
Fossils, dinosaurs, tar pits, oh my!
If you enjoy all of that, head over to the Page Museum (AKA La Brea Tar Pits) in LA. Go for free on the first Tuesday of every month (save $7 pp!). If you cannot make it that day, the museum is open daily 9:30 AM - 5 PM, but be forewarned that this place can be like a zoo with kids on weekends. According to some Yelp reviewers, an hour is more than enough time to stroll through the museum. If speed walking is your thing, admission is free for the last 30 minutes to closing.. The tar pits on the outside is free for the public to roam, so you might want to check that out beforehand while there's daylight, especially around sunset (see photo on right).
Metered street parking is available on 6th Street but read the signs carefully for no parking during week day rush hours, 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM. Otherwise, the convenient parking lot is $7 with museum validation during weekdays or flat on weekends.
Don't end your date at the tar pits! After 5 PM, walk on over to the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) for discounted museum admission (Cheap Date Idea #80). Or go to the LACMA on the second Tuesday of the month for free and then the tar pits. Either way, double the fun in culture and history! This is something different to do at least once in your life, at least a step up from watching The History Channel for a date night...

If you enjoy all of that, head over to the Page Museum (AKA La Brea Tar Pits) in LA. Go for free on the first Tuesday of every month (save $7 pp!). If you cannot make it that day, the museum is open daily 9:30 AM - 5 PM, but be forewarned that this place can be like a zoo with kids on weekends. According to some Yelp reviewers, an hour is more than enough time to stroll through the museum. If speed walking is your thing, admission is free for the last 30 minutes to closing.. The tar pits on the outside is free for the public to roam, so you might want to check that out beforehand while there's daylight, especially around sunset (see photo on right).
Metered street parking is available on 6th Street but read the signs carefully for no parking during week day rush hours, 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM. Otherwise, the convenient parking lot is $7 with museum validation during weekdays or flat on weekends.
Don't end your date at the tar pits! After 5 PM, walk on over to the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) for discounted museum admission (Cheap Date Idea #80). Or go to the LACMA on the second Tuesday of the month for free and then the tar pits. Either way, double the fun in culture and history! This is something different to do at least once in your life, at least a step up from watching The History Channel for a date night...
