178. 18th Annual Seal Day

View Comments
If you appreciate sea life and want to support a good cause, come out to the 18th Annual Seal Day on Sunday, May 16th. Enjoy a full day of fun (11 AM - 5 PM), including family-friendly games and activities PLUS live music and a free movie screening of "Sea Lions" (a documentary by a dear friend @RioFilms). The event is only one day, but all year round the Marine Mammal Care Center rescues, rehabilitates and releases seals, while allowing the public to view these creatures of nature anytime for free. It's not a big facility, but it's one with a big heart. Event admission is free but donations are always appreciated. For those who do, you will receive a VIP tour and a raffle ticket for their "Getaway" drawing. Click HERE for details.

If you miss out, this animal shelter is open for free every day 10 AM - 4 PM. Based on Yelp, this organization is rated a 4 out of 5, something worth checking out in San Pedro, especially if you have kids and a heart. One Yelper shared an excellent reason to come back: To witness the release of a seal back into the wild. How cool is that? Better yet, how about volunteer here for a philanthropic date idea! While you're in the neighborhood (less than 1 mile away), double the fun at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium for grunion run events (Cheap Date Idea #127) and free tide pool tours (Cheap Date Idea #75).

Approximate cost of creative date idea = Free.

177. Crepes de Paris

View Comments
Ooh la la, a romantic "French" date without the plane ticket!
I've had crepes before and it's not typically a cheap date idea. However, DealPerkOC.com is currently offering a $20 value voucher for 1/2 price at a mere $10. Buy your voucher online now and use anytime until 10/26/10 at Crepes de Paris, so that's plenty of time to plan your date (5+ months to be exact). Although up to 5 may be purchased, only one voucher may be used per visit. There are 4 locations between LA and OC, but this offer is only good for the creperie in Irvine. I just bought mine, so I'll have to post a follow up once I've enjoyed this scrumptious French food!

Savory simply means non-sweet, so those are the ones you can have as a meal. For example, there are breakfast crepes with eggs and bacon, or if you fancy meat, get the chicken with the mushrooms and spinach in a nice wine sauce. The menu is not limited to crepes though. The price of crepes ranges at $5-12, while the rest of the menu at $5-8: sandwiches, soup, salad and omelettes. According to reviews, the coffees are worth ordering ordering just to see the art on the frothy foam. Bon appetit!

161. Montage Resort, Laguna Beach

View Comments
Enjoy a 5-star beach-front resort for free!
The Montage Resort in Laguna Beach has been recommended by several friends. Actually, one of my friends got engaged there. I've been once but definitely want to come back again during the Celebration of Earth Day (or long weekend is more like it). Honestly, you don't really need an excuse like Earth Day or an engagement to come to the Montage!

Free activities for the Earth Day Celebration are planned every day between Thursday April 22nd and Sunday April 25th, which include:
  • Spa Beach Nature Walk: Only on 4/22 at 9 AM
  • Tide Pool Education on Treasure Island Beach
  • Falconer Education on Mosaic Pools Lawn
  • Click HERE for the detailed schedule
When you're a local to Orange County or Los Angeles, it's difficult to justify spending $595-1600 per night at a 5-star luxury hotel. However, if you are looking to hang out a nice beach-front resort, you've come to the right place! Granted, the Montage is not exactly a cheap date but nothing is holding you back from bringing a picnic and enjoying the beach here. Valet parking is normally $10, but drops to $5 with validation - a great excuse to get a drink or app at the pool-side bar or in the lobby lounge area, all of which have breathtaking views. No matter what you do here, it's a winner for a romantic date idea. If you like Laguna Beach, come back for their free monthly Art Walk (see Cheap Date Idea #95).

Approximate cost of creative date idea = Free + $5 Validated Parking + Drinks/Apps.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

157. Earth Day at SEA Lab - 4/24

View Comments
Visiting aquariums is a nice day date idea anytime, especially on Earth Day!
Admission to the SEA Lab is free every day (closed on Mondays), but donations are always appreciated (recommended $4 for family and $2 for individual). This place is more than an aquarium because the SEA Lab's mission is to rescue animals. In doing so, we can enjoy these sea creatures up close and personal in the indoor and outdoor exhibits. Free tours are available upon request. The SEA Lab is a family-friendly spot, perfect for kids (like me in the photo below) who want to touch and feel *safely* at a touch tank.

  • Clothes Collection Drive.
  • Free Haircuts: On a first come, first serve basis, hair clippings will be turned into oil-absorbing hair mats for oil spills around the world.
  • Bike Workshop: Donate it and get a 15% coupon for REI, or just bring your bike to help get it fixed.
  • Exchange Your Plastic Bags: Trade in plastic grocery bags for a reuseuable tote bag made out of plastic bottles, while supplies last.

Bonus: If you leave your car at home, then walk, ride your bike or use public transportation, you can get a free gift! Otherwise, bring quarters for metered street parking or there is a convenient pay-parking lot next door. According a Yelp reviewer, walk 1/2 mile away for free street parking.

Continue the fun by heading south to the Redondo Beach Pier, which is an easy 1-mile stroll, especially on a nice day. The Pier Shopping Area reminds me of a mini-Fisherman's Wharf from San Francisco. Bring a camera to take a silly photo at the free picture stands.

132. Cheap Movie Date Night = $10 Total

View Comments
Wow, movies CAN be a really cheap date idea!
And I'm not talking about DVD movies either! Watching movies are not usually a cheap date idea anymore.... Except a few special secret spots offer movie tickets at ONLY $2-3 per person ($5 for 3D). Boy, I don't remember movies being this cheap even when I was a kid! So you might say, "Sure, the movie tickets might be cheap, but the food and drink add up to a pretty penny." Well, how about 10 bucks total for a Movie Date Night? Yes, only $10 for 2 movie tickets, 2 popcorns AND 2 sodas. That's one for each of you, no sharing required, even though it's more romantic that way in my opinion.

Here is a list of the special secret spots for cheap movie theatres:
(1) 4 Star Cinemas in Garden Grove
  • $3 every Tuesday and Thursday all day 11 AM - 9 PM
  • $5 for 3D, only 2 bucks more on Tuesdays and Thursdays
-and-
(2) Regency Theatres every day at multiple locations
  • $3 EVERY day ANYTIME in Huntington Beach or Ventura
  • $2 before 6 PM at the Pasadena location (even on weekends, AKA matinee)
  • $3 after 6 PM in Pasadena
  • $10 Total for the Movie Date Night Special on Wednesday nights only after 6 PM in Pasadena or Ventura
  • Click HERE to find a Regency Theatre near you
In order to be more affordable, the films typically have been out for awhile in theatre. But now you can watch The Hurt Locker, award winner of 6 Academy Awards, and don't have to wait for it on DVD. I personally recommend Sherlock Holmes and It's Complicated playing at Regency Theatres. I might have to drag my man to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D (which is still a fairly new release) for only $5 at 4 Star Cinemas. I don't think anything can beat this deal besides a free movie like Cheap Date Idea #125. Enjoy!

Approximate cost of creative date idea = $3 pp or $10 Total for the Movie Date Night Special.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $16-40 Total.

128. Escondido Waterfalls

View Comments
Hikes are ok, but waterfall hikes are awesome!
Hiking in California is a day date idea good for anytime, but the best time for hiking with waterfalls is during springtime or "rainy" season. As you can see in the photo on the right here, the Escondido Waterfalls were quite amazing last month. I'm not fond of rain but it does provide 2 good things: waterfalls and rainbows. Unfortunately (depending on how you see it), no rain is expected in the next 10 days in the Malibu area.
the top fall
Originally uploaded by Gabriel Gets

According to Yelp reviewers, this is a 4.2-mile hike round trip at easy-moderate difficulty with half of the trail covered in concrete. That is unless of course you are the adventurous type and want to scramble to the top of the falls. The trail head starts 1 mile from the parking lot and then go left at the first split. Also, don't stop at the first waterfall (50-feet lower fall), because the 150-feet upper waterfall (biggest one of Santa Monica Mountains) is up ahead. Plan to spend at least 2 hours or more here, but I'd make it at least a half-day trip.

I think I have been here a long time ago (there are a few in Santa Monica Mountains), but it was during summertime, so I need to go back again for the waterfalls (hint hint to my man if he is reading my blog). I was originally going to blog about a fellow Tweeter's suggestion, Millard Canyon Falls, but learned that it was closed down until the Fall 2010 due to mudslide damage (future date idea!). I did discover an interesting website that is all about waterfalls, World of Waterfalls. This site covers different parts around the world and even has a section dedicated to Southern California AND a personalized Google Map for local waterfalls (click HERE). If Escondido Falls is not within reach, check out that site for other hiking spots near you.

For maps and reviews of Escondido Falls, here is a list of resources at your fingertips:
As with all outdoorsy date ideas, make sure to bring sunblock, bottled water, sunglasses, a hat and a camera (that's optional, but how can you not at this panoramic spot?). Obviously, proper shoes would be smart for crossing the creek a few times and trekking through muddy trails during rainy season and. Packing a picnic would be a romantic yet practical thing to do for this date idea. Have fun!

123. DIY Homemade Treats

View Comments
Attention, dog lovers or the Martha Stewarts with a soft spot for animals!
Here's a DIY date idea... Make homemade doggie treats! As a date, go the grocery store together, pick up the necessary ingredients and then work your magic in the kitchen. That is unless, your kitchen pantry is already stocked. Per @IslandDogGear's suggestion, try out one of the many FREE recipes online (click HERE).

Even if you don't have a "man's best friend", you two can bake some and take it to a local dog shelter. Or better yet, volunteer at Karma Rescue's pet adoption events (see Cheap Date Idea #53 for more info). The next events are scheduled for March 20th and 27th. I'm sure you two will make some new best friends with these homemade treats.

However, if you want to bake something for human consumption, try out Cheap Date Idea #112: Williams-Sonoma offers FREE Technique Classes. The next few are part of a baking series, where cookies are the next one on Sunday morning of March 14th. No matter what you do, be creative and have fun with your partner!

Approximate cost of creative date idea = Minimal for baking ingredients.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless + Good Karma.

122. Kayak though Naples Canals

View Comments
You don't have to go to Venice to enjoy a romantic day date on the water.
Enjoy a romantic excursion around Naples Canals, a hidden gem in the City of Long Beach. At Kayaks on the Water, the rentals are $8 per person for either a single or a double kayak.  If you are a newbie or simply want to be romantic, take a double kayak. Or make it a group date and race with friends on single kayaks. I've done it both ways and prefer a double so that I can "share" the work of paddling, if you know what I mean.

With weather permitting, Kayaks on the Water is usually open every day at 9 AM until 1 hour before sunset in April-September and then only on weekends for the rest of the year. The rental is 1 hour minimum and then prorated thereafter, so go at your own pace and simply row yourself back whenever. In my opinion, 1-2 hours is plenty of time unless you take time to admire all the waterfront homes and stop off at one of the 6 allowed spots for restaurants, Starbucks, Jamba Juice and even an ATM. Tip: Pack a small picnic with bottles of water.

Kayaking is a fairly easy to moderate outdoor activity within the harbor here (except when it's a bit windy). Note: This is NOT ocean kayaking, so you don't have to worry about waves and besides these kayaks are too hard to flip over anyway. There is one rule: you have to know how to swim even though everyone is required to wear a life vest. Recommended attire is anything you don't mind getting a little wet in: a swimsuit, board shorts and flip flops/water shoes. Some other helpful items would be a waterproof camera, sunglasses, sunblock, a hat, a ziplock bag for your keys and valuables, a towel, and dry clothes for changing afterward. Metered parking is limited to 2 hours, so come earlier to find free street parking in the neighborhood.

When we went kayaking years ago, there was a nice little surprise on our aqua-adventure: Jellyfish! In a special cove area, those amazing creatures floated right up next to our kayak (just like in the photo on the right here). According to Kayaks on the Water, you can touch these seasonal "moon-jellies" because they do not sting. Heck you don't need to go to an aquarium for sea life: see jellyfish in Long Beach, then go whale watching in Dana Point (see Cheap Date Idea #120). If you enjoy the Naples Canals, check out the ones in Venice on Cheap Date Idea #47. For the land lovers who prefer to stay dry, Meetup offers many outdoor activities, such as free group hikes on Cheap Date Idea #78, or check out FREE Shark Lagoon Nights on Cheap Date Idea #15.

117. Carlsbad Flower Fields are open again!

View Comments
Who wants a dozen flowers when you can enjoy a whole FIELD?
As of yesterday, the famous Carlsbad Flower Fields are officially back in season. This work of nature is worth the 1-2 hour drive to the northern part of San Diego, perfect for a day trip or day date idea. The 50+ acres are available for the public's enjoyment every day of the week 9 AM - 6 PM through Mother's Day (Sunday, May 9th). According to the FAQ section, the best time to go is mid-March to mid-April, but blooming is dependent on the weather conditions, as you know. Although this is an outdoor event, no pets and no smoking are allowed on the grounds. Tip: Check the 10-day weather forecast online before making the trek.

Various events are scheduled for the next 2 months, which are included with the cost of admission (AKA FREE). Check the website for details, but here are some highlights:
  • 4/10 Bluegrass Day with live music
  • 4/10-4/11 & 4/17-18 Arts & Crafts
  • 4/18 FREE Canon Macro Photography Workshop
Tickets are available online for $10 with no service fee. However, AAA members can save $1 at the door. Parking is always free. For a short thrill, the wagon ride through the fields is another $5 per person (see photo on right). But I personally enjoy strolling along the rows and rows of flowers and think it's good for your body and soul (hmm, sounds like a milk commercial).

By the way, last year there were 2-for-1 coupons available at the local libraries in Carlsbad (Georgina Cole Library Branch and Dove Library). I'm in the process of finding out if new coupons are available for 2010. This would make it a really cheap date idea! If you absolutely love flowers that much, the season pass is worth the $20, where the break even point is only 2 visits.

A camera is a must here. The last time I went was before I had a digital camera (about a decade ago), but it's definitely worth going to visit again! Maybe next month at one of the special events... This place not only is picturesque in itself, but also serves as a perfect backdrop for a Kodak Moment with your sweetheart (see second shot on right). Enjoy!

UPDATE 05/03/10: Click HERE to print a BOGO coupon (2-for-1), so now it's a really cheap date! Remember that the last day is Sunday on Mother's Day.

Approximate cost of creative date idea = $10 per person.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $20 Total.

115. Wine & Dine for Only $10-20

View Comments
Going out for a nice dinner is not usually a cheap date but...
I was strolling through the Fashion Island Shopping Center in Newport Beach on Friday with my best friend when I discovered one of the best "cheap date" dinner date ideas! My friend just informed me that the French 75 turned into Brasserie Pascal here. If it's anything like the French 75 in Burbank, the ambiance here is classy and the food, delicious. New menu options were recently introduced at a price point ($10-20), which is quite reasonable for a French Bistro. The best part is that this special is good anytime, any day of the week, any time of the day!

One of you can get the appetizer with your entree and the other, dessert, then split it, or go for double the dessert. Every entree comes with fixed sides. There are at least 3 choices for each course. My best friend has personally tasted the filet mignon when it was part of the $10 menu and confirms that Brasserie Pascal is a great cheap (yet classy) date spot.

I took a photo of the meal-deal ad (see right), but check out the full menu online (click HERE). Reservations are available online through either their website or on OpenTable.com. Actually, this is good deal for large birthday parties or group dates, because the bill is easier to split with set prices. The restaurant must have picked up on this because the one limitation in fine print is the $15 deal is not good for parties over 6 guests. By the way, parking at Fashion Island is free and plentiful.

Looking for something more casual than dinner? Check out their happy hour 4-7 PM on weeknights (website says 5-7 PM, but I called to confirm that it does start at 4 PM). For a mere $5, you have the choice of several champagne cocktails, some house wine as well as all well drinks. Based on Yelp reviewers, the "Pascal Patchwork" sampler tray for 2 more people is worth it at $10 per person. I'm definitely going to ask my significant other to come back here with me!

UPDATE 05/11/10: The Le Parfait Deal is back for the months of May and June. For a mere $10, enjoy 3 special meals almost any time any day except for dinner on the weekends (after 5pm on Fri-Sat and after 4pm on Sunday). I'm not talking about sandwiches either, but rather 2 sides with a main entree of grilled filet mignon, sauteed halibut or plat du jour (French for chef's daily special). I'd love to come here on a weeknight for a nice early dinner during happy hour (hint hint if my better half is reading).

114. Cheap (& FREE) Laughs at UCB Theatre

View Comments
Cheap date = cheap laughs and it's BYOB!
For a whole $1 (or 4 quarters), you can laugh with (or at) Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm (see photo on right) on Sundays at 6 PM at the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Theatre in Hollywood Hills. Bring cash and get your tickets same day, but the shows have been known to sell out fast. Making advance reservations are highly recommended. For "Jeff Garlin's Combo Platter", you can pay online through paypal as soon as the line up is announced, usually 1-3 days in advance (Thurs-Sat).

FREE shows are available at 7:30 PM on Sundays and Tuesdays. Unfortunately, reservations are not accepted for these free shows, so plan to get in line early (30-45 minutes is recommended). Otherwise, UCB Theatre offers at least 3 different shows every day of the week for a mere $5 or 8. As for the paid shows, improv on Wednesday nights at 9:30 PM looks hilarious where they randomly select 2 people from the crowd to publicly examine their Facebook pages. Needless to say, this particular one is not for the shy folk out there.

The doors usually open 15 minutes beforehand, but come early to get seats as this place is on a first come, first serve basis. Beer and soda are available in the lobby for $1 each. Here's the best part: It's BYOB. Yes, you heard me: NO corkage fee and NO 2-drink minimum here unlike all the comedy clubs, so this is truly a cheap date! As for parking, valet here is cheap at $5, not a bad deal for Hollywood. If you want more cheap laughs, check out Cheap Date Idea #92.

Approximate cost of creative date idea = $1 on Sundays, sometimes Free, otherwise usually $5 or $8 per person + $5 Valet Parking.

After class, follow up with a second date where you both show off your new found skills at home. Grocery shopping may seem like a mundane task, so why not make it part of your date and do it together! This is a great opportunity for DIY (do-it-yourself) and something to do indoors. While you're at it, pull out your favorite boardgames because it's perfect weather for Game Night! Better yet, invite your friends over and impress them with your culinary masterpieces. In exchange for your homemade souffles, kindly ask them to bring over some beverages (Trader Joe's offers wines under $10). Or pick another tasty dish from one of the many free recipes online at Williams-Sonoma. This is a combo anytime date idea (cooking class and game night), good for first dates, group dates and date nights for couples. Enjoy!

111. Free Museum Day at MOCA

View Comments
Museums are always a classy cultural date idea.
Not to mention it's something easy to do, especially when it's FREE. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) on Grand Avenue is free to the public on Thursday evenings, 5-8 PM. Please note that this is separate from The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, which is also located in Downtown LA but on North Central Avenue. Say thank you to Wells Fargo for saving $10 pp. If Thursdays don't work, get 2-for-1 admission by taking the metro, but the museum usually closes early at 5 or 6 PM even on the weekends (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). In case art is not your forte, take advantage of the free conversational tours of the current exhibits, which is available every day at various hours, including Thursday evening at 5, 6 and 7 PM (see schedule online).

List: Cheap Dates Ideas at Tide Pools

View Comments
To answer a Fellow Tweeter's question, what's my favorite cheap date idea?
I'd have to say that my fave ANYTIME date idea is tide pool exploration. Reason: I love discovering new creatures, like the Wavy Turban at Crystal Cove (see my photo below) and seeing what else my partner can find (yes, we are a bit competitive). Moreover, because it's F-R-E-E (usually) and anyone can do it anytime. Well, almost anytime, but it's better at low tide, speaking of which... Saturday, February 27th, marks the winter low-tide, which is expected to be a very popular day for tide pool exploration up and down the coasts.

It's staring at me!?

Tips: Wear comfy shoes and pants (or shorts, if you like) that you don't mind getting wet and bring a towel to wipe down before getting back into your car. Water bottles, hat, sunglasses and sunblock would be helpful too.

If you know of any other tide pool tours in different areas, let me know! So I now throw the question back to @JasonWheeler and you, "What's your fave cheap date idea?"

96. The Getty Villa in Malibu

View Comments
Museums are always a classy idea, even when it's FREE!
If you've enjoyed The Getty Center in Los Angeles (see Cheap Date Idea #32), then you have to check out The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, near Malibu. Of if you simply appreciate architecture and gardens, then this spot is for you. The art is interesting, but I personally love just strolling around the estate weaving in and out of the fancy statues and fountains. The weather was perfect when we went as you can tell by the photo here.

The Getty Villa is a great day date idea anytime throughout the year (including Valentine's Day, hint hint) since the museum is open daily 10 AM - 5 PM except Tuesdays. Admission is always free but reservations are required by internet or phone (click ). It's also a good group date idea, but you have to call in for your reservation if more than 15 people. Parking is not cheap ($15), so carpool if you can or take the Metro.

Just like The Getty Center, various free tours are provided at the Getty Villa, so check the schedule online to plan your visit accordingly. I recommend going on the Architecture and Gardens Tour, but you can easily wander about on your own if you prefer. During the month of February at 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM (including Valentine's Day), The Villa is offering free Glass-Handling Sessions if glassmaking peaks your interest.

While you are up in this part of town, make it a full day of fun and stop by Lake Shrine for free too (Cheap Date Idea #38).

Approximate cost of creative date idea = FREE + $15 Parking.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

94. Scavenger Hunt on Bikes

View Comments
Looking for an active and creative cheap date idea?
Mark you calendar for the 3rd Annual Venice Valentine's Scavenger Hunt (and bike ride). If you're already booked for that Sunday, make it a full weekend of fun with your Valentine. There are 5 scavenger hunts from which to choose: Saturday, Feb 13th at 10 AM or 2 PM, and Sunday Feb 14th at 10 AM, 1 PM, or 4 PM. Admission is not quite cheap at $25pp, but at least $1 of it will go toward a good cause at the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The hunt sold out early last year, so buying tickets in advance online is recommended.

The hunts are designed for teams of two, so grab your partner in crime and 2 bikes. The top 3 teams win prizes! It's BYOB (bring your own bike), unless you want to save yourself some trouble by simply renting a bike there for $10 each.

If you were born to be creative and want to take the initiative, why not DIY and create your own scavenger hunt! Venice Beach is always a lively scene, but a hunt can be done practically anywhere you wish. This would be perfect for a surprise date idea on Valentine's Day or anytime of the year. I suggest making it a group date idea to stir up some friendly competition. Treat the winning couple to Happy Hour or agree on something mutually beforehand. Don't forget to bring your digital cameras on the scavenger hunt!

Approximate cost of creative date idea = $25 pp Admission (or DIY for FREE).
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $70 Total.
