This is an easy & romantic way to explore Griffith Park.
Sunset Ranch Hollywood can take you and your partner all around Griffith Park to enjoy scenic views of the LA basin, the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. These guided tours are normally $25 for 1 hour or $40 for 2 hours. The ranch is open daily 9 AM - 2:30 PM but the best deal is on Tuesdays, breaking down to only $12.50 per person for 1 hour with BOGO coupon (print HERE). All day rides are first come, first serve.
For something more special, the 2-hour Sunset Ride is $60 (reservation only). For another $25, enjoy the Sunset Ranch BBQ event on April 17th. This is not quite the cheapest date idea, but it's not bad for a romantic evening of 2 hours of horseback riding, music, food and fun. This could be a good group date idea too, especially for a birthday.
Afterward, continue the fun by hiking through Griffith Park (Cheap Date Idea #78) or star-gazaing at the Griffith Observatory (Cheap Date Idea #4).
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $12.50 Per Person.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $50 Total.

104. Shoot Arrows like Cupid for FREE
Ok, maybe not like Cupid, but try out archery for FREE.
Every Saturday morning 9-11 AM, the Pasadena Roving Archers offer a beginning archery class. No reservations are required, but it's first come, first serve. Rise and shine to arrive early by 8:15 AM in order to get fitted for your bow and arrow. The first class (with safety and orientation) is free and then if you end up loving it, then you can sign up for their 6-week Basic Archery Instruction Program for a small donation of $5.
Learning something new with your partner can be a thrilling experience- even if you have absolutely no hands and eye coordination like moi. My man and I tried it when we were in the UK. However, I was not thrilled at first due to possible embarrassment that my arrow would go way off target into the big black hole called a forest. To my (and his) delight and surprise, I hit the bulls eye! Let's just say, bragging rights are priceless.
If you are looking for a unique date idea, I'd say archery has got to be at the top of the list. Here's a better idea: make it a surprise date! Wake up early on Saturday, grab coffee and bagel on the way, and shoot arrows for 2 hours. What else would you be doing on a Saturday morning? Besides sleeping in like me... You may or may not hit the bulls eye, but you are bound to come away with some funny or crazy moments. Bring your camera!
UPDATE 02/11/10: PRA wrote back to me with more info... Wear comfortable layered clothing (but fairly fitted on top, not loose) and closed-toe shoes (no flip flops). Plus bring sunscreen and bottled water. Allow enough time to find the place the first time, especially since parking and equipment run out quickly. Have fun!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = FREE.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

96. The Getty Villa in Malibu
Museums are always a classy idea, even when it's FREE!
If you've enjoyed The Getty Center in Los Angeles (see Cheap Date Idea #32), then you have to check out The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, near Malibu. Of if you simply appreciate architecture and gardens, then this spot is for you. The art is interesting, but I personally love just strolling around the estate weaving in and out of the fancy statues and fountains. The weather was perfect when we went as you can tell by the photo here.
The Getty Villa is a great day date idea anytime throughout the year (including Valentine's Day, hint hint) since the museum is open daily 10 AM - 5 PM except Tuesdays. Admission is always free but reservations are required by internet or phone (click ). It's also a good group date idea, but you have to call in for your reservation if more than 15 people. Parking is not cheap ($15), so carpool if you can or take the Metro.
Just like The Getty Center, various free tours are provided at the Getty Villa, so check the schedule online to plan your visit accordingly. I recommend going on the Architecture and Gardens Tour, but you can easily wander about on your own if you prefer. During the month of February at 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM (including Valentine's Day), The Villa is offering free Glass-Handling Sessions if glassmaking peaks your interest.
While you are up in this part of town, make it a full day of fun and stop by Lake Shrine for free too (Cheap Date Idea #38).
Approximate cost of creative date idea = FREE + $15 Parking.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

83. 1/2 Off Lift Tickets at Snow Valley
Are you addicted to skiing or snow boarding?
Then head to Snow Valley every day for 1/2 off! Why go solo though? Drag a date and call it a 2-for-1 deal if you need a reason for a date... Just an idea! This is an even better deal than going once per week on Tuesdays at Mountain High (see Cheap Date Idea #81),
Buy your tickets online with the discount code RUN1. Or be spontaneous, and simply bring 1 printed coupon (click HERE to print). The coupons are good the whole season through March with a few black out dates AND good for 6 people, so it can be a "group date" if you want to triple the fun. This skiing resort is about 30 minutes before Big Bear, so it's a bit of a drive from LA and OC, but at least the coupon is good anytime, even on the weekends. If you are addicted, I assume you've got the equipment and this is a pretty cheap date idea for you!
UPDATE 02/18/10: Click HERE to download the new coupon with ZERO black out days! Say thank you to @Snow_Patrol!
UPDATE 03/24/10: Snow Valley is still open for 2-for-1 skiing and snow boarding! Lift tickets only $27 per person and only $22 midweek!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $27 Per Person.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $108 Total.

70. 2 Buck Bowling, Beers & More
Yes, $2 on weekdays, Mondays through Thursdays, after 6 PM.
At Irvine Lanes, it's only $2 for each of the following: bowling games, rental shoes, draft beers, well drinks, chili dogs, and nachos! Don't forget to sign up for their email newsletter online to get free coupons on your birthday and more. I'm not a bowling expert by no means but have found that it's something easy (unless you are competitive, of course) and casual to do. Funny moments are bound to happen in any bowling alley.

60. 20 Questions or All About Us
Attention: DIY date idea for bookworms, romantics, and shy types!
"All About Us" is something to do on a rainy (or sunny) day at the comfort of your own home, actually it's DIY (do-it-yourself) anytime anywhere except for a first date. This book makes it not only easier, but also more interesting, than the game we all know, "20 Questions", especially for the bashful types. You might surprise yourself and learn a new thing or two about your partner. Consider this a casual way to document your relationship, even if you have been married for years! Reminisce and laugh over good old times or perhaps realize that there are a few things that you two have been meaning to do or want to do.
Don't feel pressured to fill out every single page at one sitting (or a single date). Have fun with it: light a fire place at home or head to the local park, pour 2 cups of hot cocoa, and break out a pen. Jump on the current sale, less than 10 bucks online (click HERE). FYI, the book was published 10 years ago and about half of reviewers rated it 5 out of 5 stars. Buy it now, use it right away or save it for a rainy day or better yet, Valentine's Day is around the corner (hint hint).
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $9.32.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

59. Day Trip: Torrey Pines Hiking
Christmas Eve was a good day for hiking today in San Diego!
California is blessed with places, such as Torrey Pines State Park in the beautiful city of La Jolla (the "Jewel"). This is my first date idea outside of LA and OC! San Diego is usually a quick and easy day trip or weekend getaway, only 1-2 hours drive without traffic depending on where you live in So Cal.
You can park for free along the coast on North Torrey Pines Road in the North Beach and South Beach areas (see my photo on right), but you will be competing with the surfers. Otherwise, the Park Reserve offers parking for $10 with 4 available lots, which provide convenient access to the hiking trails. The state park fee includes a free map guide showing the parking lots, trails, and overlook points.
The 6 trails range from 0.5 to 1.2 miles each. Most of the trails are fairly easy except for the two which descend 300 feet in steps to the beach level. If you like a challenge hiking uphill, park at the first lot near the park entrance. Otherwise, you can save your energy by parking at the last 2 lots at the top of the hill. By the way, no food is allowed in the reserve, but picnicking at the beach is ok. This means you can bring water bottles on the trails, but you can carry food to the beach (no eating on the way).
Torrey Pines State Park offers FREE nature walks on weekends and holidays at 10 AM and 2 PM. Park hours are 8 AM to sunset, which varies 4-8 PM (during winter right now it's before 5 PM). I suggest going early or later in the day, especially during summer when it can be hot. If you take Beach Trail or Broken Hill Trail, cool down down at the end of a hike by taking a dip in the ocean. Stick around to enjoy the sunset across a panoramic ocean view by sitting on a bench at one of the many overlook points.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = Free or $10 Parking.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

57. Tide Pools at Abalone Cove
Explore nature at the beach = free yet quite romantic!
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is a hidden gem in The City of Ranchos Palos Verdes right off Portuguese Bend. Here you can find 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove), tide pools, bluff top viewing areas, 2 long yet easy hiking trails, and apparently fighting hermit crabs (see photo on right).

This place gets my vote for one of the best date ideas because it hits 5-in-1 categories: free, day date, romantic, outdoors and active. The park is open daily from Noon - 4 PM on weekdays and 9 AM - 4 PM on weekends, but is closed for some holidays. Make sure to stick around to enjoy the spectacular view of the ocean and Catalina Island during sunset, which is less than an hour after closing during this time of year. If you were not aware, the best time to go is during low tide, so that the most sea life will be exposed. The lowest tide of the year is expected on New Year's Eve around 2 PM. If you want to learn fun facts and don't mind the trek, take advantage of the FREE tide pool tours at Crystal Cove in Laguna Beach (next one is scheduled on 12/31, see Cheap Date Idea #44).
UPDATE 01/09/10: Point Vicente Interpretive Center offers a FREE monthly 2-hour activity, which includes tide pool tours of of Abalone Cove Shoreline Park. Any parking fees at PVIC are waived for 30 minutes before and after the event. Click HERE for a map of PVIC and more info. The schedule for 2010 include the following tide pool tours:

Sept 18th at 9 AM
Nov 20th at 1 PM
Dec 18th at 12:30 PM.

54. Paparazzi Day in Hollywood
Wanna go on a date with Jack Nicholson or Marilyn Monroe?
The one chance that you might have with a movie star will be at the newly opened Madame Tussauds in Hollywood. The conversations might be one-way with the wax museum figures, but it makes for great photo ops!
Where else can you have a Kodak Moment with Madonna or Tiger Woods without paying an arm and a leg? Admission at the door is regularly $25 per person or save 10% online anytime for "Priority Access" tickets or get 1/2 off during December through Goldstar.com (only $12.50 pp + $4 processing fee!). The cheapest option for parking is only $2 for up to 4 hours with validation at The Hollywood & Highland Center (an easy 2 minute walk on the same block). For those with a sweet tooth, treat your date to a dessert crepe from the French Crepe Company on the 2nd floor at H&H.
This wax museum makes for a good "day date" anytime (click HERE for more day date ideas). It's open daily from 10 AM til 8 PM on weekdays and til 10 PM on weekends. Your date and you can pretend to be the paparazzi for the day!! Grab your cameras and be silly, why not?
UPDATE 02/08/10: New dates for cheap tickets have been added on Goldstar.com for the next two weeks, Feb 9-21 (unique cheap date idea on Valentine's Day too!).
UPDATE 04/04/10: For a spontaneous date here (AKA last minute), print a $5 off coupon HERE (good for a group date up to 3 couples, expires 12/31/10). Thank you, @dvanderberg and @RobShamTrojan!
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $16.50 per person + $2 Parking + $8 Drink or snack for parking validation.

52. FREE Disneyland Tickets in 2010
You heard me, F-R-E-E Disneyland during the whole year of 2010.
All you have to do is donate some of your time for a good cause and then you get to spend a full day at the magical kingdom.
The "Give a Day. Get a Disney Day." Program is something fun AND free to do with that special someone. Plus it guarantees at least two dates, right? Don't forget about the bonus points called good karma!
In order to participate in this program, register on Disney's website and select one of the posted volunteer opportunities online (click HERE). Note that I said "some" of your time because there is no specification on the number of service hours, but it is limited to one pass per person for the program. Are a few hours of your time worth $72? Well, that's exactly the cost of a 1-day pass! Just do any one of the listed volunteer activities and receive a voucher for a 1-day pass. For annual pass holders, the voucher is non-transferable but it is exchangeable (see FAQ online).
The first million volunteers get to...

38. Find Peace at Lake Shrine
Who would have thought that one could enjoy a tranquil lake with swans, trails, lily ponds, rose gardens, waterfalls and a Dutch Windmill without having to leave Los Angeles? Lake Shrine can be your secret spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city! Actually, this place was loved by the King himself, Elvis Presley. Another tidbit: Gandhi's ashes are stored here near the landmark, the Golden Lotus Archway. Needless to say, bring your camera.

34. Bonfire at Aliso Beach
A cheap yet romantic date idea...
Aliso Beach Park is one of the bonfire locations that have remained open in California. This flat sandy beach in Laguna Beach is user-friendly: convenient on-site paid parking lot, restrooms, picnic tables, bonfire pits, except it's BYOFW (bring your own fire wood). Duraflame log could run you about $10 and don't forget the matches! I suggest hitting the beach in the early afternoon so you can claim a bonfire pit and set it up before sunset, but you can hang out until closing at 10 PM. Some other free things to do: bring a football, explore the tidepools, wander on the hiking trails, pack a beach blanket and a picnic basket, and don't forget the...

32. FREE at The Getty Center
Mr. Getty wanted the public to enjoy art for free, so why not? Don't worry if you don't know anything about art, because The Getty offers various tours for free, including a Collection Highlights Tour at 1:30 or 4:00 PM. I suggest going on the garden tour on a nice clear day. Being on top of a hill, the museum offers a great vantage point for a panoramic shot of Los Angeles. Admission is free and reservations are no longer required. The Getty Center is open daily until 5:30 PM except for Saturdays til 9 PM and closed on Mondays. If you have already done the tours, then the best time to go is after 5 PM on Saturdays to enjoy the sunset view from the garden (and FREE parking). Just something cultural and free to do once in awhile...
UPDATE 12/7: If you've got little ones, check out the schedule online for family friendly events.
UPDATE 01/28/10: The Getty is offering new concerts in 2010 called Saturday Nights at the Getty, but advance reservations are required (click HERE), which become available about one month before the event. The next event on March 27th will be available to the public starting February 25th.
UPDATE 05/12/10: Leonardo da Vinci is on exhibit now through June 20th. The best time to go is on Saturdays after 5 PM so that you can enjoy FREE parking as well as the awesome sunset from the Getty gardens with a panoramic view of The City of Angels.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = FREE Admission + $15 parking (or free parking after 5 PM on Saturdays).
Actual value of the cheap date idea = Priceless.

31. Medieval Times Dinner Show
Medieval Times is something fun and different to do at least once. Where else can you go to watch knights jousting while feasting on finger-licking food? Yup, literally finger-licking as in no spoons and no forks provided. As of now until Dec 3rd on Sunday thru Thursday, the Buena Park Castle is offering a special deal of $25 per person with discount code 25EB11, which is even better than the 2-for-1 birthday deal. This may not be the cheapest date idea, but Regular Admission is $56 plus tax per person. The dinner show is 2 hours of entertainment with a 4-course meal and a non-alcoholic beverage, typically starting at 7 PM except for Sundays 3:30 and 6:00 PM. For those who cannot make it before Dec 3rd, $32 discount tickets are available on Goldstar.com. Enjoy!
UPDATE 01/01/10: More cheap tickets available on Goldstar.com for every night in January 2010.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = $25 + tax per person.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $122 total.

18. Buona Vita is Buona Anytime
Buona Vita is my personal favorite Italian restaurant in Hermosa Beach for any occasion, whether it's a first date, your 365th date night or even a group birthday dinner. This cozy restaurant is popular especially during summer time, so the atmosphere is always lively during weekdays and weekends. Since it's first come, first serve, put your name down on the wait list, if there is a wait, then take a quick stroll on The Strand walkway to admire the sunset on the beach.
The menu is quite reasonable (see online), especially after a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant.com, which you can buy online right now for ONLY $4 instead of the regular $10 each. The discount code "harvest" expires on Nov 5th (yes, tomorrow, so I posted this a half-day early), but gift certificates have NO expiration date in the state of California. The minimum food purchase is $50, so you can spend as little as $25 out of pocket. That easily covers appetizer, salad, 2 entrees, and dessert. The best part is that there is no corkage fee at Buona Vita, making it a favorite among the locals to no surprise. TIP: Trader Joes is a fantastic place for picking up a good bottle of wine for about $6-10. Another TIP: Park behind the "Skate Park" about a block away for free or try to find a spot in the neighborhood for free during off-peak season (double check the street signs). Have a buona time!
UPDATE 12/11/09: Sale on Restaurant.com, buy a $25 gift certificate for only $2! Use discount code SHARE until 12/14/09. Metered parking is free for 3 hours during the Christmas holidays in Hermosa Beach.
Approximate cost of creative date idea= $2-4 Gift certificate + $7 Bottle of wine + $25 Dinner.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $70.

13. Huntington Botanical Gardens
Every month, The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens gives away free tickets on the 1st of the month for visiting on the first Thursday of the next month, such as tomorrow Nov 1st for Dec 3rd. The free tickets go fast, so make sure to call 800.838.3006 or go online at 9 AM on the dot. The limit is 5 free tickets per request. You can choose tickets to come at morning entry (10:30 AM to Noon) or afternoon entry (1:30 - 3:00 PM), but please note that the closing time is 4:30 PM. You may be tempted to lay on the greenery in 1 of the 7 botanical gardens so bring something to sit on. Unfortunately, no food and picnicking are permitted, but you can enjoy something from their tea room and cafe. The tea room is popular, so reservations are recommended. If you miss the free tickets, admission is $15-20 for adults and parking is free. When I visited The Huntington, I was amazed at how something this serene yet grand was in the middle of Los Angeles (actually, it's in Pasadena).
UPDATE 01/09/10: Get your FREE tickets on February 1st at 9 AM sharp for use on March 4th. Check online for the exact dates of the monthly Free Days.
UPDATE 02/23/10: Get 2-for-1 admission ANYTIME through the end of March 2010. Click HERE for a printable coupon.
Approximate cost of creative date idea = Free.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $40.
